It confirms dengue but provides no further intelligence. It doesn't tell the doctor which type of dengue virus is causing the infection, a piece of information that, as we'll see, is incredibly important.


The IgM and IgG Antibody Tests The Late Responders

These tests measure the immune response in your body to dengue infection. When a person becomes infected with the dengue virus, their body’s immune system forms an army of antibodies to fight off the infection.

  • IgM Antibodies: These antibodies are "first responders." They usually show up between Day 5 and 7 of the fever as a symptom of an ongoing illness.

  • IgG Antibodies: These are the long-term antibodies that remain in the body for life and protect against further attacks of the same type of dengue.

The IgM antibody test will almost certainly be negative. In a secondary infection (getting infected a second time with a different dengue serotype), the immune response is different. The IgG antibodies spike almost immediately, which can confuse the IgM test results. Traditional tests, while useful, are a game of timing. They are unreliable in the most critical early window and they fail to provide the detailed information needed for high-risk patients.
