Clinical Relevance

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the leading cause of Cervical Cancer, and the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI). Over 50% of sexually active women are infected at some point in their lives, with 10-20% developing persistent infection.

HPV types 16 and 18 have been regarded as high-risk cancer-associated types and HPV types 31, 33, and 35 have been demonstrated to have an intermediate association with cancer. Persistent infection with a group of “high-risk” HPVs may lead to Cervical Cancer.

HPV genotype screening and detection is crucial in patient management, enabling gynecologists to determine treatment regimes before lesions undergo invasive changes. Latest reports suggest HPV-16 is the most prevalent (>85%) genotype detected in India among other genotypes.
