Clinical Relevance

Herpes Simplex Virus 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2) are known to cause a wide range of clinical manifestations and are a major cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world. HSV-1 transmits by oral-to-oral contact, causing oral herpes (including symptoms known as cold sores), but can eventually lead to genital herpes. HSV-2 is a sexually transmitted infection leading to genital herpes and is known to increase the risk of acquiring and transmitting HIV infection.

World Health Organisation (WHO) reports have estimated that 3.7 billion people under age 50 (67%) have HSV-1 infection and 491 million people aged 15–49 (13%) have HSV-2 infection.

The most effective antiviral medications for patients infected with HSV are acyclovir, famciclovir, and valacyclovir. Hence, effective diagnosis of HSV is very crucial in patient treatment management.
